Goa to Gokarna by Car: Day Trip or Overnight?

Gokarna is about 150 km south of Panaji on the NH 66 coastal highway, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours each way by car without long stops. A day trip works if you leave early and keep to the town, the temple and one or two beaches. One night there lets you see the beaches at an easier pace.

Here's how far it is, what there is to see, which stops are worth it on the way and how a private car trip is priced.

How far is Gokarna from Goa?

Karnataka Tourism puts Gokarna about 145 km from Goa, around 3 hours by road, and Rome2rio gives 152 km from Panaji. We plan on about 150 km and 3 to 3.5 hours from Panaji, because the coastal highway runs through towns and the border, and nobody wants to rush a road like that.

Where you start matters. From a hotel in Calangute, Baga or Anjuna, you first have to get through or around Panaji, so add that time. From the far south of Goa, around Palolem, you're already part of the way there.

Gokarna is a temple town and beach village in Kumta taluk, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, about 59 km south of Karwar. One thing to avoid on a booking form: the Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna has nothing to do with Mahabaleshwar the hill station in Maharashtra, which is a separate Goa to Mahabaleshwar route.

Can you do Goa to Gokarna as a day trip?

You can, with six to seven hours of driving in the day. A day that works looks like this:

1. 6 am: leave Panaji, with breakfast on the way.

2. 9.30 am: Gokarna town and the Mahabaleshwar Temple, open from 6 am to 12.30 pm.

3. 11.30 am: Om Beach, about 6 km from town, for lunch and a walk.

4. 2.30 pm: start back north.

5. 6 to 7 pm: back in Panaji, later for North Goa.

That leaves no time for the coves you reach on foot or by boat. If they matter to you, stay a night.

What is there to see in Gokarna?

The Mahabaleshwar Temple. One of Karnataka's most important Shiva temples, believed to date to the 4th century. Karnataka Tourism lists it as open from 6 am to 12.30 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm, with free entry. The dress code is strict: men in a dhoti and bare-chested, women in a saree or salwar suit, and no jeans or shorts.

The beaches. Karnataka Tourism names five:

• Gokarna Main Beach, by the town and the temple

• Kudle Beach, the largest, lined with cafes and guesthouses

• Om Beach, about 6 km from town, named for its two joined curves

• Half Moon Beach, reached only by a cliffside walk from Om Beach or by boat

• Paradise Beach, the most remote, past Half Moon on foot or by boat from Om Beach

There's no road to Half Moon or Paradise, so a car can only take you as far as Om Beach.

Which stops are worth adding?

Mirjan Fort. A laterite fort on the Aghanashini river, about 21 km from Gokarna and 8 km north of Kumta. Its history is debated, but one well-known account credits Rani Chennabhairadevi, the "Pepper Queen", with building it in the 16th century. It's mostly ruins now, with double walls, bastions and old wells, and it makes a good hour's stop.

Murudeshwar. Further south on NH 66, in Bhatkal taluk, known for its 37 m statue of Shiva by the sea and a 20-storey temple tower. It adds real distance, so it suits a two-day trip better than a Gokarna day trip. See our Goa to Murudeshwar route.

When is the best time to go to Gokarna?

Karnataka Tourism recommends October to February, with temperatures of about 20 to 30°C and calmer seas. You also avoid the coastal highway's heaviest rain.

In the monsoon, check conditions before you set off. Very heavy rain can close this coast's highway: in July 2024 a landslide at Shirur, near Ankola, blocked both lanes of NH 66. Our monsoon road travel guide has more on planning long drives in the rain.

One way, return or overnight?

• One way suits you if Gokarna is the next stop on a longer trip and you're moving on from there.

• Return in a day suits a temple visit and a beach lunch, with the long drive both ways.

• Overnight suits anyone who wants Half Moon Beach, a sunset at Om Beach or a slower morning.

• Temple clothes that meet the dress code, if you plan to go inside

• Swimwear, a towel and shoes with grip for the cliff paths between beaches

• Water and snacks for the road

• Money for entry tickets, boat rides and meals, which aren't in the car fare

Passenger numbers don't include the driver:

• Sedan: 4 passengers and 3 bags

• SUV: 4 passengers

• MPV: 6 passengers

• Premium MPV: 7 passengers, a Toyota Innova Crysta

• Winger: up to 12 passengers

• Tempo Traveller: up to 17, 20 or 26 passengers
