Sedan, SUV, MPV or Tempo Traveller: Which Car for Your Goa Trip?

Choose the car by people and bags together. A sedan takes 4 passengers and 3 bags, an SUV 4 passengers, an MPV 6, an Innova Crysta 7, a Winger up to 12 and a Tempo Traveller up to 17, 20 or 26. If the count is close, go one size up for airport runs and long drives.

Seat counts alone can mislead. Four adults fit a sedan; four adults and four big suitcases don't. Here's how each car works for real Goa trips.

Which car fits how many people in Goa?

Passenger numbers don't include the driver:

• Sedan: 4 passengers and 3 bags. For example a Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze or Hyundai Aura.

• SUV: 4 passengers. A Hyundai Creta.

• MPV: 6 passengers. A Maruti Ertiga or Toyota Innova.

• Premium MPV: 7 passengers. A Toyota Innova Crysta.

• Winger: up to 12 passengers. A Tata Winger.

• Tempo Traveller: up to 17, 20 or 26 passengers. A Force Traveller.

Each vehicle page shows how many large bags the car takes, so check it against your luggage before you book. The models named are examples: you book the category, with its seats and size.

Is a sedan enough for a family of four?

For a day out, usually yes. A sightseeing day or a dinner run carries a bag or two, and a sedan is the efficient choice for a couple or a small family. Ours are subcompact sedans such as the Swift Dzire, so four adults will be comfortable for a short ride and snug for a long one.

For an airport run it depends on the luggage. A sedan takes 3 bags. A family of four with four large suitcases and cabin bags won't fit, and you don't want bags on laps for the drive from Mopa or Dabolim. Go up a size and check the bag count on the vehicle page: for four big cases, the Premium MPV is the safe choice.

SUV or MPV: what's the difference?

Both carry more than a sedan, in different ways.

The SUV (a Hyundai Creta, a subcompact crossover SUV) takes 4 passengers, the same as a sedan, and suits people who'd like a higher seat and a little more room.

The MPV (a Maruti Ertiga or Toyota Innova) takes 6 passengers. The Ertiga is a compact MPV with seven seats in three rows, so it's the one to pick when the group is five or six. With every seat in use, the space behind the last row is smaller, so mention big suitcases when you book.

Is the Innova Crysta worth it?

For long days, often yes. Our Premium MPV is the Toyota Innova Crysta, a mid-size MPV that takes 7 passengers. It's roomier than the compact MPV, which matters on:

• A drive out of Goa, such as Gokarna or Hampi

• A 10 or 12 hour day with a car and driver

• A family with grandparents, where getting in and out matters

• An airport run with a full car and full luggage

For a 40-minute transfer with light bags, the standard MPV or a sedan is usually enough.

When does a Winger or Tempo Traveller make sense?

When you'd rather keep everyone together than split the group across cars. The Winger is Tata's passenger van, which we run for up to 12 passengers. The Tempo Traveller is Force Motors' bigger van, launched in 1987 under the Tempo Traveller name that everyone still uses, and ours come in sizes for up to 17, 20 or 26 passengers.

Two things to check before you book a big van:

1. Access. Some villas are down narrow or steep lanes. Send the map pin and we'll check; if needed, we'll agree a meeting point on the main road.

2. Luggage on airport runs. A full van of people plus everyone's suitcases needs the bigger size, or a separate car for bags.

Which car is easiest for grandparents and young children?

A higher seat is easier to get in and out of than a low one, so the SUV or the Premium MPV is kinder on knees than a sedan. In an MPV, seat older travellers in the middle row, nearest the doors, and keep the third row for the agile.

With small children, think about the stuff as much as the people: a pram, a nappy bag, snacks and a change of clothes all need a home. If in doubt, go up a size, especially for a long day.

Which car for which trip?

• Airport transfer: choose for bags first, then people. The fare is for the whole car, shown before you pay.

• A car for the day: choose for comfort. You'll spend hours in it. See car with a driver by the hour.

• A day tour: choose for seats; luggage is usually light.

• Out of Goa: go one size up for the long drive, and count overnight bags.

What should I tell you about the luggage?

Count large and cabin bags separately, and mention anything unusual: a pram, golf clubs, a surfboard, musical instruments. If a child in your group uses a car seat, bring it and count it as a bag so the space is planned for. If the fit is close, send a photo of the luggage on WhatsApp before you pay. It's much easier to fix vehicle size while planning than at the kerb.

What does the fare include?

Every fare is for the whole car, not per person, and you see it before you pay. Fuel, the driver allowance and GST are included. Tolls, parking and airport charges are not part of the fare: any standard airport toll shows as its own line before you pay, and other tolls and parking are charged at actual cost, only when they apply. Bigger cars cost more, but with more people sharing one fare, the cost per person often comes down.
