North Goa or South Goa Tour: Pick the Right Day

Choose North Goa for forts, busy beach towns and short hops between stops. Choose South Goa for quieter beaches, temples and heritage, with longer drives in between. If you only have one day, pick the side you're staying on.

Both make a good private sightseeing day. They're just different days, and squeezing them into one generic checklist is how a holiday turns into a day in traffic.

Is North Goa or South Goa better for sightseeing?

It depends what you want to see and where you're staying.

North Goa suits you if you want variety close together: a Portuguese fort with a lighthouse, a run of lively beach towns, cliffs and coves, cafes and a sunset viewpoint. Most stops are a short drive apart.

South Goa suits you if you'd like a slower day: long open beaches, the temples near Ponda, the Old Goa churches, or the far south around Palolem. Stops are further apart, so the day has more driving and fewer, longer stops.

What does a North Goa day look like?

Our North Goa Sightseeing Tour takes about 8 hours and runs:

1. Fort Aguada, built between 1609 and 1612, and its lighthouse from 1864

2. The Candolim, Calangute and Baga beaches

3. The Anjuna and Vagator cliffs

4. An optional stop in Fontainhas, Panaji's Latin quarter

For a calmer north, the Morjim, Ashwem and Arambol Tour follows the quieter beaches beyond the Chapora river.

What does a South Goa day look like?

There are two good versions.

Central: our South Goa Sightseeing Tour, about 8 hours, covers the Colva and Benaulim beaches, the Mangeshi and Balaji temples and the Old Goa churches. The Mangeshi temple is about 21 km from Panaji and Old Goa about 10 km, so the heritage half of the day is compact.

Far south: our Palolem and South Goa Coast Tour, about 8 hours, covers Palolem, the Butterfly Beach viewpoint, Agonda and Cabo de Rama Fort. From a North Goa hotel it's roughly two hours' drive each way.

Since 31 December 2025, Canacona, home to Palolem and Agonda, has officially been part of Goa's new Kushavati district. On the ground everyone still calls it South Goa. Our South Goa tours guide has both days in detail.

How far apart are North and South Goa?

Further than the map suggests, because the roads go round the rivers and through the towns. A few distances help:

• Anjuna is about 18 km from Panaji.

• Old Goa is about 10 km east of Panaji.

• Colva is about 40 km from Panaji.

• Palolem is roughly two hours by car from a North Goa hotel.

So a hotel in Candolim makes the north an easy day and the far south a long one, and a hotel in Benaulim does the opposite. Panaji sits in the middle, and from there both sides work. You can see where everything sits on our Goa map.

Can you see North and South Goa in one day?

Yes, if you accept a big day. Our North and South Goa Highlights tour is about 9 hours: the north forts and beaches, the Old Goa churches, the south temples and Miramar, then Panaji and the Latin Quarter. You'll see the landmarks, with less time at each.

If you have two days, do one side each day. You'll spend less of your holiday in the car.

Which side suits families, couples and groups?

• Families with young children: the side nearest your hotel, with fewer stops and a proper lunch break. North Goa's shorter hops are usually easier.

• Older travellers: whichever side has fewer stops and short walks between the car and each sight. Tell us about any mobility needs before the day.

• Couples: the far south for quiet beaches, or North Goa ending at a sunset viewpoint.

• Groups of friends: North Goa for the beach towns and cafes, in one Winger or Tempo Traveller rather than several cars.

Which side is better in each season?

From November to February both sides are at their best, though the north's beach towns are at their busiest around Christmas and New Year, so start early. From June to October, inland South Goa comes into its own: our Waterfalls and South Goa Tour pairs a seasonal waterfall with a spice plantation, the Colva beaches and the Old Goa churches. Whatever the month, in heavy rain keep the day short and keep one stop flexible.

North vs South Goa at a glance

• Pace: the north is busier with short drives; the south is calmer with longer drives.

• Forts: Aguada and Chapora in the north; Cabo de Rama in the far south.

• Faith and heritage: Old Goa and the Ponda temples sit between the two and appear on our South Goa day.

• Beaches: busy and social in the Calangute and Baga belt; long and open at Colva and Benaulim; curved bays in the far south at Agonda and Palolem.

• Best for one day from the north: North Goa. From the south: South Goa.

What do the tour fares include?

Every tour fare is for the whole private car and your group, not per person, and you see it before you pay. It includes a private AC vehicle, an experienced local driver, hotel pickup and drop, fuel and the driver allowance. Tolls and parking are extra, at actual cost, only when they apply. Entry tickets and meals aren't included. You pay in full online when you book.
