North Goa Sightseeing Tour: Forts, Beaches and a Day That Works

A North Goa sightseeing day follows the coast north: Fort Aguada first, then the Candolim, Calangute and Baga beaches, then the cliffs at Anjuna and Vagator, finishing at Chapora for sunset. By private car with a driver it's a comfortable 8-hour day from a North Goa hotel.

The trick is not to add too much. Old Goa, the far north beaches and Dudhsagar are all good days out, but each is a day of its own.

What are the best places to see in North Goa in one day?

Fort Aguada and the lighthouse. The Portuguese began the fort in 1609 and finished it in 1612, on the headland at Sinquerim where the Mandovi meets the sea. Its four-storey lighthouse, built in 1864, is described by Goa Tourism as the oldest of its kind in Asia. Goa Tourism lists the fort as open daily from 9.30 am to 6 pm, and there's a small fee to climb the lighthouse. The fort's old jail is now the Freedom Struggle Museum, opened in December 2021.

Candolim, Calangute and Baga. The busy beach belt, one beach running into the next. Calangute has the largest beach in North Goa. Stop for a walk and a coffee rather than trying to see all three properly.

Anjuna and Vagator. Cliffs, headlands and smaller coves. Anjuna, about 18 km from Panaji, holds its flea market on Wednesdays in the season.

Chapora Fort. Built by the Portuguese over an earlier outpost of the Adil Shahi rulers, high above the Chapora river with a view north to Morjim. Goa Tourism suggests visiting in the evening, once the afternoon heat has gone.

What is the best order for a North Goa day?

1. Morning: Fort Aguada, when it opens and before the heat builds.

2. Late morning: Candolim, Calangute and Baga.

3. Lunch: somewhere along the Baga to Anjuna stretch.

4. Afternoon: the Anjuna and Vagator cliffs.

5. Sunset: the Chapora viewpoint.

Going north along the coast means you never double back, and you end the day at a fine sunset spot. If your hotel is in Panaji, start at Fontainhas instead and finish at Chapora.

Is Chapora Fort open in 2026?

Restoration work on Chapora Fort began in September 2026, and the local MLA expects it to finish by December. The work may affect access while it's going on. On our tour, Chapora is always "subject to access": if you can't go up on the day, the fort is still a fine sight from Vagator beach below it.

What about the quieter beaches further north?

Across the Chapora river, Morjim, Ashwem, Mandrem and Arambol are calmer and more spread out. Morjim is a nesting beach for olive ridley turtles, protected with the help of the Goa Forest Department.

How long does a North Goa tour take, and how is it priced?

Our North Goa Sightseeing Tour takes about 8 hours door to door. It includes a private AC vehicle, an experienced local driver and pickup and drop at your hotel.

The fare is for the whole car and your group, not per person, and you see it before you pay. Fuel and the driver allowance are included. Tolls and parking are extra, at actual cost, and entry tickets, meals and shopping aren't included. You pay in full online when you book.

Timings and the order of stops can change with traffic, weather and opening hours, so tell the driver at pickup which stops matter most to you.

Tour, or a car with a driver?

Pick the tour if you'd like the route planned for you. Pick a car with a driver by the hour if you want to set your own stops, linger over lunch or mix sightseeing with shopping. Packages run 8 hours and 80 km, 10 hours and 100 km, or 12 hours and 120 km, and North Goa's coast stops are close enough together that 8 hours usually does it.

When is the best time for a North Goa day?

November to February are the most comfortable months for a day on the coast. Calangute and Baga are at their busiest around Christmas and New Year, so start early then and keep lunch away from the main beach road. Which car should I choose for a sightseeing day?

Sightseeing days carry little luggage, so choose for seats and comfort. Passenger numbers don't include the driver:

• Sedan: 4 passengers, fine for a couple or a small family

• SUV: 4 passengers, with a little more room

• MPV: 6 passengers

• Premium MPV: 7 passengers, a Toyota Innova Crysta

• Winger: up to 12 passengers

• Tempo Traveller: up to 17, 20 or 26 passengers

A sedan is enough for two. A group of friends will be more comfortable together in a Winger than split across two cars.
